Toilet Tour comes to life

I love it when one of my whacky ideas come to life. Let’s sit on a toilet with our knickers down in the highstreet in Essex and outside Kings College, that’ll get some attention. And attention we got!

On a freezing cold November day we bared (nearly all) on a toilet to raise awareness of only flushing the #3Ps – poo, paper and pee, ‘cos plastic’s don’t belong in the sea! And with over 85,000 views on facebook word is getting out.

#BogStandard is a campaign we’ve been running at City to Sea since 2016. With 8% of plastic on UK beaches coming from our bathrooms*, more people need to know the toilet’s not a bin. Hands up, I was a flusher. I watched my Mum flush, I followed suit. (The only time I ever saw my Grandad angry when when he was knee deep in shit unblocking our drains. So I never flushed cotton wool, that was a no go … but tampons? For some reason they were different and down they went.) I had no idea they were made up of plastic …

As you’ll see from the video we had a lot of fun! It was great to be able to do this on my home place of Essex. Coming up with the concept and sitting on the loo wasn’t my only role. I came up with the the Toilet Times – The Illustrated Poo News designing it on Photoshop.

Harry came up with the name (genius!), we had some fascinating stories in there … Some of which I wrote, and then the word wizz who is Natalie Fee made sense of my ramblings. I edited the video along with a work experience girl, though for this camera man James Light filmed, which was fantastic you can see.

I got to share the joy of getting our knickers down with the wonderful Jasmin Tribe. City to Sea’s campaigns coordinator (who pulled my bright idea together into a proper plan!) and coordinator of Shark Fest.

We ‘ad a laugh! It’s good to raise a smile at the same time as raising awareness.

Working with Anglian Water and some amazing volunteers, our stickers have gone up in 1000s of toilets across the region. So more people will see while they’re having a wee!

I wore #CharityShopChic for the occasion, those coats, love then! Aomething I’m starting to show more on my insta account.

Remember – only flush poo, paper and pee, ‘cos plastic’s don’t belong in the sea!

2.7 million views on our film – Plastic-Free Periods?

We’ve been working on ‘unflushables’ at City to Sea. Plastic that’s flushed down the toilet. which is kinda physically flushable – there’s a lot that fits down a toilet if you give it a go! But that’s not to say it should be …

Walked down any beach and what do you find? Cotton bud sticks. Cotton bud sticks that are flushed down the toilet and make their merry way to the ocean. Yep that’s where lots of flushed products end up!  It’s not just cotton buds … Watch the film for some mind blowing figures!

Hands up, I was a flusher! I watched my Mum flush, I followed. Tampons were the main culprit. It wasn’t until living in Portugal where even toilet roll was a no no (we had a septic tank not on the mains) that I stopped. Then in 2008 I switched my menstural products as they came wrapped in plastic, hands up once more – I didn’t know the actual tampon was plastic!

To raise awareness of flushing we’ve made a few films. This is by far my favourite and our most popular. With 2.7 millions views on facebook  (1.1 million in the first week!) it’s hit a cord.

We had a lot of fun making this. Friend’s helped out, acting and offering their daughter to act to! (She was so easy to work with, and up for more acting work get in touch if you’d like me to hook you up) Another lent us his stunning kitchen. I wanted to create juxtaposition within the scene. I also wanted it to be the younger generation teaching the older … As I notice around me this is what’s happening! While it also meant more younger people would share it it being this dynamic.

Check it out, please share it and if you’re inspired to switch your menstrual  products head to this page at City to Sea where we’ve been kindly offered lots of discount codes!

Switching menstrual products can save you a heap of cash, as well as a heap of plastic!

Remember; ever refusal adds up!

Making Refill film with Rob Greenfield

Recently I spoke with Rob Greenfield. I also put him up, so we got to know each other, and he got to know of my video editing skills with the ‘Switch the Stick’ film I made for our campaign at City to Sea, which has over 100,000 views on Facebook.

As well as being an adventurer, environmental activist, humanitarian, and dude making a difference. He is dedicated to leading the way to a more sustainable and just world. Rob makes films that go viral. He knows what works and what’s sharable.

Rob heard of our campaign Refill, our tap water initiative and wanted to share it with the word.

So together we made this film, which has had so far over 750,000 views on Facebook, and we opened our Refill app global because of it!

It’s amazing to have built this partnership with Rob, getting the word of positive solutions out to a far wider audience. It goes to show what a good dude he really is, as he shares his knowledge with me, giving me guidance in creating video content that goes viral baby! I’m very grateful and realise how special it is, to not only meet then speak with one of my heroes, but to go on and work with him.

Check out the video and once you have, share it!

Then down load the app and start refilling. Every refill is a bottle of water not purchased, a perfect solution to plastic pollution!

Remember, every refusal and refill adds up.
